The multi-million dollar project, paid for by the National Science Foundation, will put laboratory equipment up to two miles deep and include live video feeds, seismic monitors and temperature gauges. Unlike standard short-term battery-powered devices, the cabled miles of electrical wires and an internet connection in the new lab will provide both researchers and armchair scientists access to real-time information.
